The Ye Family Villa.

Old Master Ye and Old Madam had not been in good spirits recently, gazing at a family portrait of seven with sighs every day.

What had caused this once happy family to reach this stage?

"Old man, do you think if we were just an ordinary family, we might not have so much misfortune?"

Old Master Ye shook his head. "It has little to do with wealth or power. Ordinary families have their own troubles. Even farmers may fight each other over a tiny piece of land."

"Alas, the fault lies with us for not noticing Junwen's abnormal behavior earlier. We parents failed in our duty."

Ye Junli was about to leave for work when he saw his aged parents staring at the family portrait with tears in the living room, which pained him deeply.

His brother Junwen had made a mistake, while his son was the victim. His heart ached more than anyone else's.

He did not know how to console his parents, only hoping Junwen still had some conscience to turn himself in soon. As long as he sincerely repented, they would still be family.

At that moment, Auntie Chen came in from outside holding a file bag.

"Mr. Ye, I found this file bag at the front gate. Not sure whose it is, but I was afraid it might be important, so I brought it in."

Ye Junli took it and said, "I see, you can go now."

Feeling the thin contents through the bag, he decided to check the gate's surveillance footage to see who left it there.

The footage showed a person in a black down jacket, heavily bundled up with their gender indistinguishable, deliberately leaving the file bag at the gate around 2 AM.

Ye Junli frowned and opened the bag, revealing the words "DNA Paternity Test" inside.

"What's this?" he wondered.

Old Master Ye was also drawn by the mysterious file. "A paternity test? Whose? Why would someone deliberately leave it at our doorstep?"

Without hesitation, Ye Junli flipped to the last page and read aloud:

"Based on available data and DNA analysis, the results support Ye Junli and Gu Qi being the biological parents of Xu Wanwan, but do not support Ye Junli and Gu Qi being the biological parents of Ye Jinmeng."

Ye Junli exclaimed in shock: "This can't be possible!"

Old Master Ye and Old Madam hurried over to look at the report.

"Ah? How could this be! Our dear child..."

Old Madam dropped onto the sofa, refusing to believe what she saw. S~ᴇaʀᴄh the N(o)vᴇl(F)ire.nᴇt website on G𝘰𝘰gle to access chapters of novels early and in the highest quality.

Although stunned, Old Master Ye remained rational. "Don't jump to conclusions yet. What if someone forged this file to harm our Ye family using some scheme? Junli, get someone to investigate the origins of this file and Wanwan's background. Let's wait for the investigation results before saying anything more."

"Got it, Dad. Mom, let's keep this a secret from Qi and the children for now."

"Sure, we won't say a word. You'd better head to the company."

...

Lying in his hospital bed, Ye Jinchen's mind kept replaying "Wanwan is our real sister" and the face of another Ye Jinchen shouting "I want revenge!" He hadn't had a good rest in a long time.

When Gu Qi brought a meal box in and saw her son's troubled look, she immediately approached with concern. "What's wrong, son? Are you feeling unwell? Should I call the doctor?"

Seeing Gu Qi about to rush out, Ye Jinchen quickly stopped her. "Mom, it's nothing. I'm just feeling hungry."

Gu Qi didn't sense he was lying, so she put her mind at ease, helped prop Ye Jinchen up, and placed the meal box on the side table.

"Eat more if you're hungry. This porridge simmered for a long time - it smells so good."

"Thanks, Mom. You made all my favorites."

While eating, Ye Jinchen stole glances at Gu Qi's face. Indeed, Xu Wanwan resembled her a lot, especially those identical eyes. He'd never noticed before, but now he saw the striking similarity.

And when he thought about it, Xu Wanwan's mouth and nose were also very much like his dad's.

Thinking of Mengmeng, Ye Jinchen felt conflicted. If Mengmeng truly wasn't a child of the Ye family, she would be so heartbroken.

Then another image of Ye Jinchen flashed in his mind, yelling loudly: "She won't be heartbroken, she'll be jealous! You know what jealousy means? It means she'll go insane and kill everyone!"

Ye Jinchen paused while eating and closed his eyes, trying hard to shake off that vile figure in his head.

Never mind, no matter the outcome, he should still let his dad investigate whether Xu Wanwan is truly a child of the Ye family. If she is, they cannot let her continue suffering hardship outside. He believed Mengmeng would accept her too, as the two were already inseparable sisters now.

After quickly finishing breakfast during the brief moment when Gu Qi went to wash the dishes, Ye Jinchen called Ye Junli.

On his way to the office, Ye Junli had been pondering over the paternity test file. Luckily, Uncle Li was driving, or his state of mind could have caused an accident.

He had just arrived at the company when Ye Jinchen's call came in.

"Jinchen, what's up?"

"Dad, I have something to tell you."

"Yes? What is it?"

Ye Jinchen glanced outside the ward and lowered his voice. "Dad, could you look into Xu Wanwan's background and do a paternity test?"

Ye Junli froze, thinking Ye Jinchen had also received that mysterious file, and immediately grew tense. "Jinchen, did someone also send you a paternity test report?"

Ye Jinchen was puzzling over how to explain the encounter with the other dimensional Ye Jinchen to his father when he heard this question, causing him to pause in bewilderment.

"Dad, what do you mean? I didn't receive any paternity test file."

Ye Junli breathed a slight sigh of relief and recounted the morning's events at home to Ye Jinchen, who then furrowed his brow in concern.

"You said some mysterious person deliberately left the file at our doorstep?"

"Yes, the surveillance footage didn't show their appearance clearly at all. I've had people discreetly investigating it. But why did you ask me to look into Wanwan's background?"

Ye Jinchen sighed, "Dad, you may not believe this, but during my coma, I kept hearing a voice echoing in my mind saying, 'Wanwan is the real child of the Ye family.'

Of course, I didn't believe it at first, but I suddenly realized how much Wanwan resembles you and Mom. It's like a thorn stuck in my heart, so I thought I should ask you to investigate."

Ye Jinchen chose to conceal the matter of the other Ye Jinchen, as his dad was already looking into this.

Ye Junli didn't dwell on it either, only advising, "For now, don't mention this to your mom or Mengmeng and the others. I'll get to the bottom of it."

"Okay, Dad. You go take care of it. Mom's back, I'll hang up now."

As Gu Qi entered, she heard that and smiled, "You were on the phone with your dad."

"Yeah, I asked Dad if the company is busy this new year. Once I recover, I'll go back and let him take it easy in retirement!"
