Chapter 5 – Why Is Ling Tian Such a Person?

As humans, nearly all of our emotions, all our joys and sorrows, are influenced by external factors, especially by the people around us. But if the individuals affecting your emotions are Puppeteers, then wasn’t it simply horrifying.

“So … this is why the monster killed the victims in a particular order and was so cruel?” Lin Yaoyao exclaimed, her eyes widening. “It was to make the child’s mother suffer as much as possible.”

Because compared to being brutally murdered, there was nothing more agonizing than witnessing your family and child being butchered. This kind of agony was undoubtedly the most extreme form of suffering.

“Was this family exceptionally harmonious and happy?” Ling Tian asked calmly.

“Yes,” Lin Yaoyao nodded. “Our investigation confirmed that they were a very happy and harmonious family. There were no domestic conflicts, and they had no external enemies or grudges.”

Ling Tian replied coldly, “When you’re at your happiest, they take everything from you, your family, your child – giving first and then taking away. This is a common method used by Puppeteers.”

Lin Yaoyao was left speechless. She didn’t want to believe what Ling Tian was saying, but the way he presented it sounded so logical and chilling. Could there really be monsters like that in the world?

Could they be around me too?

“So… is there any way to distinguish between humans and Puppeteers?” Lin Yaoyao quickly asked, still holding onto a glimmer of hope.

“Cut open the skull,” Ling Tian replied. “If it’s a human, there will be a brain inside. If it’s not a human, there will be a core bead, what we call the Puppeteer’s Core.”

Lin Yaoyao’s face changed. So, to verify if someone was human, you had to cut open their skull? That method was completely impractical.

“Can’t it be detected using scans, like X-rays or other imaging methods?” she asked with a hint of desperation.

“Under any scanning device, Puppeteers are indistinguishable from regular humans,” Ling Tian said. “The only way is to verify with your own eyes by cutting open the skull.”

However, there was another way – Ling Tian himself. He possessed the Void Eye, which allowed him to identify who was a Puppeteer and who was human. This made him the most significant enemy of all Puppeteers. No one else in the world had this ability. Of course, no instrument was of any use in identifying them.

Lin Yaoyao wrinkled her brow. So, under normal circumstances, it was impossible to tell who was human and who was a Puppeteer?

“Even my family members could be Puppeteers!” Lin Yaoyao said, looking at Ling Tian. “Even you could be a Puppeteer!”

“You learn fast,” Ling Tian nodded, then added, “If I were a Puppeteer feeding on fear, I could have devoured you by now.”

Hearing this, Lin Yaoyao instinctively moved a step back. Please, don’t scare me like that!

“So, you need to learn to control your emotions,” Ling Tian continued. “All your emotions – love, hate, joy, anger, grief, and everything in between.”

Lin Yaoyao nodded lightly. Yes, control all emotions. As long as her emotional score remained low, Puppeteers wouldn’t target her. She was starting to understand why Ling Tian was the way he was. He never showed any emotions.

Even if the sky falls, you wouldn’t see any emotional fluctuations on him.

Even if he took someone’s first time, his face was still calm …

Lin Yaoyao realized that Ling Tian had known about the existence of Puppeteers for a long time, and that’s why he was this way.

“This world … it’s terrifying,” Lin Yaoyao exhaled deeply.

“This world has always been more terrifying than anyone can imagine,” Ling Tian said.

After all, it’s a world in the midst of an endless apocalypse. The next catastrophe, three months from now, will be the Puppeteers’ doing. If we had eliminated them all in the first round, it would have stopped the apocalypse, and there would be no second or third rounds. Ling Tian had come close to ending it all, but people stopped him and chose to believe in love, in the possibility of coexisting with Puppeteers, rather than believing in him.

“How many Puppeteers are there in the world?” Lin Yaoyao asked.

“Half,” Ling Tian replied.

“Half?” Lin Yaoyao was stunned, even though she had mentally prepared herself. So, every one of two people could be Puppeteer? That meant almost everyone had unknowingly encountered Puppeteers. Everyone could potentially become prey at any moment. And everyone was completely … oblivious!

“We can’t distinguish between Puppeteers and humans, but can Puppeteers differentiate between themselves?” Lin Yaoyao asked.

“They can perceive human emotional scores directly through their eyes,” Ling Tian replied. “If someone has emotional scores, they’re human. If not, they’re a Puppeteer.” Sᴇaʀᴄh thᴇ NƟvelFɪre.ɴet website on Gøøglᴇ to access chapters of nøvels early and in the highest quality.

Lin Yaoyao looked shocked. So, Puppeteers could see everything while humans remained unaware. One was in the light while the other was in the dark. In this way, weren’t Puppeteers at an advantage?

“Oh, and there’s another question,” Lin Yaoyao suddenly remembered. “If the murderer is a Puppeteer, does that mean the husband’s brain was also consumed? But he died before the child, why?”

Indeed, there was another question. Why didn’t they leave the husband for last? That way, they could have inflicted more suffering on his brain.
