Chapter 22: Accidentally entering a pyramid scheme nest!

Lin Yang bit his lower lip, holding back a smile, and swiped his card again. The customer had set a small amount without a password, allowing the transaction without entering one. After swiping 3 RMB 8, Lin Yang handed back the bank card, saying, “3 RMB 8… that’s not enough!”

Surprisingly, the young man handed over another bank card, saying, “Swipe another three yuan here!”

Lin Yang was dumbfounded but had to go along, suppressing his laughter. Taking a taxi and swiping a card was already uncommon, but now it was first 3 8s and then 3 6s.

After swiping, Lin Yang returned the bank card again, calculating the amount: “Three eight plus three six… total… seven four, this is not…”

Before he could finish, the guy handed over another bank card, saying, “Swipe this!”

Lin Yang stared blankly at the bank card. This was already the third card he had swiped for a taxi ride. Uncertainly, he asked, “How much is this brush?”

The response was, “One piece four!!” Lin Yang sighed.

After swiping a piece of four, he glanced around, half-expecting another bank card to appear. However, this time, it didn’t happen.

“It’s only 8 yuan in total, 20 yuan less!” Lin Yang exclaimed.

The young man replied flatly, “If it’s not enough, it’s gone. There’s no money in my pocket.”

Perplexed, Lin Yang asked, “You don’t have money and still take a taxi?”

Looking at the two guys behind, he questioned, “What about them? Don’t they have any money in their pockets?”

The young man responded, “No, don’t ask. These three cards belong to the three of us.” Lin Yang was left speechless and amused. Even the netizens in the live broadcast room couldn’t help but laugh.

[Take a taxi and give it to three people directly. It’s really bankrupt!!]. [I’m afraid to say something later, give me an invoice!]. [It’s funny to look at, but I feel sad when I smile. Thinking about myself, I have had such an experience before, and I don’t know whether to laugh at him or myself.]. [Crap, what car do you take if you don’t have money? You are weak, and you are justified? There are still 20 yuan short. Who will pay for it? Could it be that the driver was unlucky? I spend money on gas, labour, and work for you? The Leshan Giant Buddha is there. Why you don’t sit there.]. [It can be seen that Lin Yang has restrained himself very much. He would burst out laughing if he didn’t feel disrespectful to the passengers.].

….

Lin Yang looked at the young man helplessly, sensing they were playing a game of bluff. They handed over all the money left in their pockets, and though careless, Lin Yang felt they shouldn’t resort to such tactics. The atmosphere in the car turned awkward. The boys in the back row remained silent, wearing expressions that seemed more pitiful than villainous.

Realising his mistake, the young man proposed a solution, “Driver, I didn’t mean to give you money on purpose. I really have no money in my pocket. If you don’t mind the trouble, I live in this community. Come with me, and I’ll go back and get you the money.”

Lin Yang frowned at this suggestion, “Can’t you go back and get the money and give it to me? I’ll wait for you here!”

The young man shook his head, explaining, “If you go back, you won’t be able to get out, so you have to go get it with me.”

Lin Yang persisted, asking, “Why?”

The young man was vague, stating, “It’s hard to say. You can decide whether to go with us to get the money. It’s right in front, less than 100 meters away. Just go upstairs.”

Reluctantly, Lin Yang didn’t want to go, but considering their attitude, they clearly had no money. After some internal struggle, he accompanied them, “Okay, get out of the car. I’ll go get it with you!”

The four walked into an old residential area characterised by small six-story buildings from decades ago. The ground was dilapidated, with potholes and a pungent smell near overflowing trash cans. Lin Yang observed the run-down state, understanding why they lived in such conditions.

[Now, there is such a community? It looks a little scary; it feels like a ghost town. What are the densely packed walls? Are they all spiders?]. [The people living in this kind of place are some elderly people and some young people who can’t afford the rent, so don’t expect the environment to be much better.]. [If I walked the stairs in the middle of the night, I wouldn’t dare to go. It’s like exploring a haunted house.]. [Lin Yang is so courageous; he even goes home with others to get money. Isn’t he afraid of being controlled? This place allows me to come in. Even if I am killed, I will not come.].

….

Several individuals ascended the stairs to the top floor. The man who occupied the co-pilot seat previously knocked on the door.

Boom boom boom~~~.

After a while, the door opened, revealing a young man who cautiously peeked out. Upon seeing the three passengers, he visibly relaxed. Spotting Lin Yang, he eagerly opened the door, saying, “Come in!” The trio entered promptly, leaving Lin Yang outside feeling a bit awkward. “Well… I’ll wait for you here,” he said.

A group suddenly passed by the room’s door. One man, around 30 years old, dressed in a suit and energetic, approached Lin Yang, smiling and placing a hand on his shoulders. “Looks like we’ve got a newcomer today. Welcome, everyone!” Applause followed, and the crowd pushed Lin Yang into the room. Soon after, a loud bang signalled the door closing firmly. Lin Yang was bewildered, realising he had unwittingly walked into a pyramid scheme.

Attempting to extricate himself, Lin Yang explained, “Well… I’m here to collect money for the taxi fare that hasn’t been paid yet!”

The welcoming man nodded, smiling and asked, “Give! Must give, how much?”

Lin Yang replied, “Um… 20 yuan and 20 cents, just give me 20 cents!”

The man agreed, and the crowd pooled their money, with Lin Yang noting the dreary, poorly furnished environment in the 60-square-meter room.

After counting, the man handed Lin Yang the fare, saying, “This is your fare. It’s still 40 cents short, I’ll make it up for you later!”

Lin Yang took the money and attempted to leave, but the man stopped him, saying, “Wait a moment!”

Lin Yang tensed, realising escaping wouldn’t be so simple. The man introduced himself as Peter, the person in charge, congratulating Lin Yang on his “luck.”
